hello September!

hello September!
You have a new face in this new place
(with scapes and adventures
(and journeys and tastes
(and rains and friends)
and I anticipate some
great moments with you,

such as (but not limited to)
The jagged glorious ridiculous evidence
Of massive rocky beautiful upheaval
Which whisper into one’s ear
(if
(of course
(one is quiet enough):

“Solid”

: ) i love this poem, even if i’m having a hard time grasping all of it…
would you care to explain a little?

September was my first full month in Oregon, and i was looking forward to noticing how it is different from lovely Arkansan Septembers, with new places and new friends. i wrote this after hiking up a mountain somewhere in the Willamette Nat’l Forest: when i got to the top, i thought, Mountain, what would you say to me if i listened to you? and so i put my ear against him, and thought of all the seismic force it took to get that particular boulder up to that height, and how something of such ostensible strength was really the result of very shaky and uncertain things–if we have a little faith we can tell one to jump in the sea!–but still, what the mountain said to me in my ear, was SOLID. that word, solid. and that has a lot to do with my life since being here, i realize. i’m still learning what the lesson really is supposed to be.
